1939-1945:
Tens of thousands of Nepalese soldiers fight for British in World War II.
1947:
Nepali National Congress was established.
1948:
Prime Minister Padma Shamsher Rana shares the first Constitution of Nepal.
Prime Minister Padma Shamsher Rana resigns and Mohan Shamsher Rana takes his position and represses opposition.
1952:
King Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev takes the throne after the Rana rule is ended in 1951.
1953:
Nepal's Sherpa Tenzing Norgay along with a New Zealander become the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
1955:
Nepal joins the UN.
King Mahendra takes the throne after his predecessor dies.
1959:
Nepal adopts a multi-party constitution.
Nepali Congress Party with B.P. Koirala as prime minister arises after the first general elections are held.
1960:
Parliament is suspended by King Mahendra after B.P. Koirala wins the election as premier.
1962:
A new constitution is written establishing a non-party system of councils known as "panchayat", which gives the King sole power.
1972:
King Mahendra is succeeded by Birendra.
1990:
Pro-democratic agitation by Nepali Congress Party (NCP) in the form of street protests are repressed by security forces resulting in numerous deaths and mass arrests.
King Birendra agrees to the new democratic constitution.
1991:
Girija Prasad Koirala of the NCP wins the first demoocratic election and becomes prime minister.
1994:
There is a shift in government from democratic to communist.
1995:
The newly founded communist government is dissolved.
2000:
GP Koirala becomes prime minister once again.
